I approach each client interaction with the goal of enhancing their quality of life by recommending cultivars that address emotional, mental, and physical needs or provide the best path to achieving the desired experience, whether for therapeutic purposes or adult-use enjoyment. As the stigma surrounding cannabis continues to fade, more clients feel comfortable seeking guidance on cultivars that can enhance personal connections, including those that foster intimacy.
My first experience with such a client occurred two months into my career while working for one of the most well-known national dispensary chains. I was assisting a 69-year-old woman and her 72-year-old husband in selecting pre-rolls. Both were dressed as if they were avid nature lovers, likely spending much of their time camping to fulfill this passion. As I guided the bubbly woman and her 6’4” husband to another table of pre-rolls, she suddenly stopped, turned to face me, and asked about a personal lubricant (unfortunately, no longer available in today’s marketplace).
Woman: “Do you have (product name)?”
Me: “Why yes, we do.”
She immediately stood on her tiptoes, placed her cupped hands on my shoulder, and, with each word shouted, her knees buckled before bouncing back up.
Woman: “BEST”… “ORGASM”… “EVER!!!”
Me: ……..
Mouth agape, I glanced at her towering husband. Bashfully, he looked down, kicked at an imaginary object on the floor, and simply replied, “Yep.”
As I attempted to process this surreal encounter, two thoughts dominated my mind:
- Good on you, girl, for still getting it at 69!
- I know you didn’t just start getting it, so what a bold statement to make!
Later, I reflected on this interaction and realized that sexual health and intimacy are vital aspects of my chosen profession, meriting further research and understanding. As knowledge of cannabis and its effects continues to grow, my own perspectives have evolved. However, one thing remains consistent—it’s all about the terpenes.

Lavender is rich in linalool, a terpene with floral, woody, and herbal notes, known for its sedative, calming, and muscle-relaxing properties.
Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in plants, herbs, and other organisms that give them their distinctive scents. Once you understand the therapeutic benefits associated with each aroma, you can determine which varietal will achieve your desired goal simply by smelling it. For instance, lavender is rich in linalool, a terpene with floral, woody, and herbal notes, known for its sedative, calming, and muscle-relaxing properties. When inhaled, it naturally encourages relaxation.
When combined with THC, the potency of terpenes is believed to increase significantly through a phenomenon known as the entourage effect. The terpenes most likely to stimulate arousal include limonene, pinene, and caryophyllene.
Cultivars rich in the citrusy, sweet, and fresh-smelling terpene limonene include: Green Crack, Blue Dream Haze, Gorilla Glue, Heavy OG, and GMO Zkittlez.
Cultivars rich in the piney, herbal, and crisp-smelling terpene pinene include: Skywalker OG, Biscotti, Panama Red, Punto Rojo, and MAC.
Cultivars rich in the spicy, clove, and wood-smelling terpene caryophyllene include: Blueberry Muffin, Planet of the Grapes, Runtz, Princess Leia, and Peach Ozz.
A few notes to keep in mind:
- Each person’s endocannabinoid system, the part of the body that processes cannabis, is as unique as their DNA. You may need to experiment with different cultivars to find the ones that work best for your body.
- If you can smell the cultivar before purchase, take the opportunity. The nose knows what will work well with your endocannabinoid system.
- When setting the mood, remember that less is more, both in the amount inhaled and in THC percentage. Overmedicating can hinder physical performance.
- For women experiencing menopause, consuming cannabis orally (through tinctures or edibles) can increase vaginal dryness. Inhalation is a better option. Regardless of the method, keep a lubricant handy, and maintain open communication with your partner to alleviate stress and clarify that dryness does not equate to a lack of desire.
- Unfortunately, none of the listed cultivars can address underlying medical conditions such as ED.
If you decide to visit a dispensary to determine which cultivars work best for you and your partner before investing in growing your own, remember that you’re likely not the first customer to ask a budtender about arousal. Don’t feel embarrassed. The benefits of creating a deeper and more meaningful connection with your partner—something you truly deserve—far outweigh any temporary awkwardness in discussing the topic. A good budtender will approach the subject sensitively and respectfully, maintaining a PG tone. Enjoy the experience!
