A Grower’s Journey: Sustainable Cannabis Cultivation for Healing In a world often driven by profit and mass production, it’s rare to find stories rooted so deeply in compassion, resilience, and radical self-sufficiency. But for author and grower Jeffrey Hickey, cannabis cultivation became more than a practice—it became a mission born of necessity and love. This is the story of how one man turned personal crisis into a purposeful journey—using plant medicine not just to heal, but to live intentionally, grow sustainably, and share generously.
The Path to Plant Medicine
Jeffrey’s introduction to cannabis wasn’t sparked by curiosity or trend. It began as a desperate search for relief after back-to-back medical crises. In early 2015, shortly after recovering from prostate cancer surgery, Jeffrey became the full-time caregiver for his wife, Karen, who was hit hard by two undiagnosed autoimmune diseases. “My wife, Karen, went fully symptomatic just months after my surgery. Her system catastrophically gave out. She was largely bed bound for over two years. I was her caretaker.” During his own recovery, Jeffrey had a life-changing experience with CBD: “About four days after surgery, I was literally lying on the floor in the fetal position. My dispensary called, I explained my pain, and they recommended something new. Within 30 minutes, my spasms had stopped.” That moment ignited a realization: if CBD could help him, it might help Karen. After seeing positive results with a tincture from Jayden’s Juice, he was inspired by founder Jason David to grow his own medicine. Not to sell—but to ensure quality, consistency, and truth in what he was giving his wife.

“During these times of utter madness, I wanted to set an example of unassailable compassion.”
A Philosophy of Compassionate Cultivation
Jeffrey’s journey as a grower was never about money. From day one, it was about healing. And through this purpose, he developed a philosophy of radical compassion: “If you grow something special, share it. If someone is in need, give it away.” This mantra came from an elder grower who had mentored him early on—and it stuck. He calls it a “seed of delicious rebellion” in a world obsessed with commercialization. “During these times of utter madness, I wanted to set an example of unassailable compassion.” That compassionate approach is reflected in every jar of flower, every capsule, every tincture made with love, care, and scientific precision in his home.
Becoming a Teacher: From Blog to Curriculum
In 2020, when the pandemic struck, Jeffrey was asked by Oaksterdam University’s Natalie Darves to write a grower blog. What he created was far more than expected: Isolation Grow, a step-by-step guide for growing cannabis as medicine. “There were articles and tips online, sure, but nothing from A to Z focused on growing for a sick person. I wanted to create the document I needed back in 2015.” That blog evolved into the Home Grower Program—Oaksterdam’s first non-commercial cultivation curriculum, co-written and edited by Jeffrey. It teaches practical growing, focused on sustainability, quality, and bartering—not profit. “Everything we designed was rooted in compassion and community.”

Jeffreys growing philosophy revolves around sustainability across every axis
What Sustainable Growing Really Looks Like
Jeffrey’s setup may sound simple—but the impact is profound. He hasn’t purchased cannabis since 2016. His closet contains 70+ half-gallon jars of flower. His fridge is packed with customized capsules and tinctures. “I have a fridge full of pills made to my exact perfect dose. Micro-dosing for day, a mellowing dose for evening, and a sleep dose for night. Every time is the perfect dose.” His growing philosophy revolves around sustainability across every axis:
- Health Sustainability: No more OTC meds. Just cannabis.
- Economic Sustainability: No more dispensary trips. Just freedom.
- Social Sustainability: Community education and mutual aid over competition.
The Science Behind the Medicine
Unlike many growers chasing high THC percentages, Jeffrey is a terpene evangelist. He explains: “The best medicine comes from terpenes. I’ve had 13% THC cultivars with high terpenes that got me beautifully high. It’s not about THC—it’s about what’s in the whole plant.” Testing is also essential: “If you’re growing for someone sick, test your plants. Know your terpene profile. That’s how you make real medicine—not guesswork.”
Advice for Aspiring Home Growers
Feeling overwhelmed? Jeffrey gets it. He’s been there. Here’s his practical advice for those just starting out: 1. Know your sun. “Make sure you actually get 12+ hours of sun where you grow.” 2. Understand your water. “Test your water quality and pH. It makes a huge difference.” 3. Respect your space. “Cannabis plants get big. Make sure you have room—not just to grow, but to dry and process.” 4. Mind your neighbors. “Especially outdoors, keep your grow discreet. You need chill neighbors.” 5. Take care of YOU. “You’re no good to anyone if you’re running on empty. Nutrition, sleep, meditation—these aren’t luxuries. They’re survival tools.” And to those growing for a loved one? “Breathe. You are not alone. There is help. You must be strong… but I promise, you’re about to learn amazing things.”
A Legacy of Healing and Giving
Jeffrey Hickey isn’t just an author or a grower—he’s a pioneer of purpose-driven cultivation. His model of sustainability reminds us that the heart of cannabis is care. Through the Isolation Grow blog, the Home Grower Program, and his living example, he continues to empower others to reclaim their health and their power—one cultivar, one capsule, one act of kindness at a time. In an era where cannabis is being commodified at lightning speed, his story is a grounding reminder: the plant’s truest power lies not in profits, but in its potential to connect, to heal, and to grow something better—for ourselves and for each other.
