Homemade Tinctures

Homemade Tinctures

My grandmother lived what she believed – Homemade is Better. She was a voracious
baker, cook, seamstress, and canner of fruits and vegetables. As a child, I loved
descending the painted green stairs into what I considered to be a “magical” root cellar.
The air cooled and the moisture increased with each step as the earthy smell of the
exposed walls permeated my nose. Anticipation of palatable as I pulled back the floral print
bed sheet hung on a stretch of rope, revealing a myriad of shapes and colors tightly pressed
inside their glass cages offered a feast for the belly and eyes. I grew up realizing
Homemade is Better is one of life’s truisms.

Today, I’ll be applying the lessons I learned in childhood and share how to create medicinal
and mood enhancing sublinguals at home. The first step is to gather the proper equipment.

You will need:

 An amber, cobalt, or opaque mason jar with a lid – pint size or larger
 One milliliter eye dropper
 One quarter ounce (1/4) of your favorite cultivar
 Your choice of either EverClear alcohol or olive oil (not extra virgin)*
 Cheese cloth or a mesh strainer

* Note: there is a difference between an alcohol-based and oil-based tincture. An oil-based
tincture can be used either topically or orally. An alcohol-based tincture can only be used
orally but binds better with the terpenes and cannabinoids so it’s richer in the healing
qualities the cultivar has to offer. I prefer to use an alcohol base for the healing qualities
and when stored in the refrigerator, the shelf life is incredibly long.

Another consideration for you to decide upon is whether you want to experience
psychotropic effects when dosing. If you don’t want that experience, do nothing. If you
want a psychotropic experience, decarb the flower for 45 minutes at 250 degrees using an
oven safe glass pie dish before proceeding with the next step.

I like to have a mix of both mood enhancing and medicinal sublinguals. Currently, a few of
the cultivars that I have in my refrigerator include: Blue Dream – my favorite happy
sunshiny day sativa, Mimosa for when I’m attending a daytime social event or want to feel
creative, Jack Herer for when I want clarity or to put a little pep in my step, GMO to help
with any aches or pains, and Gelato for when I want a night time social creature or kick
back, relax, and still be able to track the plot of a movie experience.

With all your supplies gathered, you will:
 Place your one quarter ounce of flower into the mason jar

 Add enough of your chosen liquid to just cover the buds

 Seal the lid and shake vigorous for about 5 minutes

 Place the jar in a dark cupboard.

 Repeat shaking your tincture for five minutes a day for 30 days.

At the end of the month, using the cheese cloth or mesh strainer, separate the plant
material from the liquid. Your tincture is ready.

If you want accurate dosing, you can invest in a device to measure the milligram strength
per milliliter. I use the TCheck device that measures the strength of oil-based and alcohol-
based tinctures or infused butter. It’s a great way to prevent over medicating and to create
homemade edibles. If you want your tincture faster, you can invest in any of the
devices that can give you a finished product in about 10 hours.

As you make more batches, you will refine your skills over time and you will appreciate the
undefinable quality only found in homemade goodies.
