Cannabigerol (canna-bi-gerol) or CBG has been getting a lot of press lately as research has
gained traction and results are being released – many of which support long held beliefs of
how this minor cannabinoid can help the human mind and body. Let’s explore what this
potent element of the plant offers.
CBG is the third most abundant cannabinoid found in the cannabis plant and is the
precursor of the cannabinoids THC, CBC, and CBD. It is best known for helping with
gastrointestinal issues such as IBS, Crohn’s, and ulcerative colitis. In other words, the G of
CBG equals Gut.
The G also equals Giggles. It is believed that the properties of CBG can help improve the
mood of people suffering from depression as it has been reported to provide an
overwhelming sense of happiness that seems to come out of nowhere.
Other potential applications of CBG include providing focus and helping people suffering
from anorexia or individuals in treatment for cancer that have lost their appetite and need
stimulation.
While more research is needed, early research suggests that CBG may inhibit the growth of
several leukemia cell lines and improve neuroinflammation and oxidative stress protection
linked to Alzheimer’s, Huntington’s, and Multiple Sclerosis.
An important thing to remember about CBG is that potency is stronger when sourced from
a whole plant extract than it does as an isolate. Cultivars rich in this minor cannabinoid
include: Emerald CBG, Jack Herer, Turbo Diesel, Sunset Sherbet, and Girl Scout Cookies.
A final note. Though every person has an endocannabinoid system that processes the
healing properties of the cannabis plant, the endocannabinoid system is unique to the
individual and processes the plant with different levels of efficacy.
Be wary of people claiming to know exact dosage levels, you will have to experiment (and
track) what works for you – it is best to start at a low amount and increase in small
increments. Claims of a cure should be met with skepticism for medical conditions.
Antidotal reports of success may exist but remember that just because it worked for one
person doesn’t constitute a guarantee it will work for you. If you choose to add CBG to your
wellness routine, keep a journal tracking your usage so you have a record to reference
later.
